Rome, Italy – Women's world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka has withdrawn from the Italian Open because of a right shoulder injury.
Azarenka made the decision after Wednesday's second-round victory over Shahar Peer. She earned a 6-1, 6-2 triumph and was set to play Dominika Cibulkova in the third round on Thursday.
Cibulkova now advances to the quarterfinals.
Azarenka has already won four titles this year, including the Australian Open back in January. She lost to Serena Williams in the final at the Madrid Open last weekend after a loss to Maria Sharapova in the Stuttgart finale last month.
The French Open is set to begin in just 10 days.
