The Oakland Athletics have placed pitcher Brandon McCarthy on the 15-day disabled list because of a strained right shoulder.

McCarthy last pitched on May 17 in a no-decision against Texas, allowing four runs on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings. He had won his previous three starts and owns a record of 3-3 with a team-best 2.95 earned run average in nine outings this season.

This is the right-hander's seventh career stint on the disabled list and second in two years with Oakland.

The Athletics recalled pitcher Jim Miller from Triple-A Sacramento to fill the roster spot. Miller made six relief appearances with Oakland from April 25 through May 11 and notched a record of 1-0 with a 1.93 ERA.

In 10 games with Sacramento, the right-hander is 0-2 with two saves and a 2.92 ERA.
