Anichebe denies Chelsea at the Hawthorns

West Bromwich, England (SportsNetwork.com) - Victor Anichebe produced a late equalizer at the Hawthorns on Tuesday to help West Bromwich Albion secure a point from a 1-1 draw with first-place Chelsea.

The Baggies were in good stead after holding Chelsea scoreless for the majority of the opening period, but the Blues broke through on the stroke of halftime to take the lead.

Willian's corner kick deep into first-half stoppage time was flicked to the back post by David Luiz and Branislav Ivanovic was arriving to convert from close range.

Chelsea clung to its narrow lead for much of the second half as West Brom had the better run of play after the restart, and it ultimately cost the Blues two points as Anichebe leveled the score in the 87th minute.

Saido Berahino was the architect of the goal, whipping in a cross to the top of the six-yard box where Anichebe met the delivery with a glancing header that kissed the far post on its way into the back of the net.

Anichebe's strike not only snaps Chelsea's 459-minute streak without conceding a goal, but it also prevents the Blues from moving four points clear at the top of the table. Jose Mourinho's men improve to 57 points, but they have left the door open for Arsenal or Manchester City to take first place with wins on Wednesday.
