The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim announced on Friday that left-handed pitcher Jason Vargas has been placed on the 15-day disabled list due to a blood clot found in his left armpit area.

The move is retroactive to June 18. Vargas was diagnosed with the clot following his outing versus Seattle one day earlier, in which he allowed two runs over seven innings to improve to 6-4 with a 3.65 ERA over 14 starts this season.

Vargas will seek a second opinion next week to determine whether surgery will be necessary.

To make room on the roster, the Angels selected the contract of pitcher Billy Buckner from Triple-A Salt Lake. The righty made one start for the team earlier this season and earned the win by tossing five innings of two-hit ball in a 7-0 victory over Kansas City on May 25.
