The University of Akron has fired head football coach Rob Ianello after two disastrous seasons.

The Zips went just 1-11 in both of Ianello's seasons in charge of the program. They dropped their final eight games this year, ending the campaign with a 68-19 loss at Western Michigan.

Akron hadn't had a one-win season since 1994.

"In some areas, the program has made considerable progress under his leadership," Akron athletics director Tom Wistrcill said in a Saturday release. "Unfortunately, the results on the field fell far short of our expectations. After a comprehensive evaluation, I have determined that our football program needs to move in a new direction."

Ianello was an assistant coach at Notre Dame prior to taking the Akron job.
