Ajax signed defender Robert van Koesveld from Heerenveen on Tuesday, agreeing to a three-year contract with the 17-year-old Dutch youth international.

"This is a step up for me. I didn't have to think about it for long, but I did discuss the decision with several people. I can develop even more at Ajax," Van Koesveld said

Van Koesveld has been with Heerenveen's youth academy since he was 13. He will officially join Ajax on July 1, and his deal will run through June 30, 2015.

"This is a nice next step," Van Koesveld said.

"In him, we see a player who is very interesting for Ajax. In terms of defense and build up, he's a player of the future," Ajax youth academy trainer Wim Jonk said. "This guy deserves a lot of attention.

"We have specialists who can bring him to the next level. If he does well, he could join A1 next season."
