The Baltimore Ravens have selected Colorado cornerback Jimmy Smith with the 27th overall pick, after missing their turn in the NFL draft.

The Ravens were supposed to pick 26th, but time ran out before they made the pick. Kansas City stepped ahead of Baltimore and made its selection before Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome nabbed Smith.

Smith supposedly dropped to late in the first round because he had a positive marijuana test while at Colorado. But the 6-foot-2, 205-pounder is a strong cover corner and should improve a defense that is not deep at the position.

Smith was the third cornerback taken in the first round. Patrick Peterson of LSU went to Arizona at No. 5 and Prince Amukamara of Nebraska was taken 19th by the New York Giants.
