Enschede, Netherlands – Twente announced Tuesday that Co Adriaanse has been dismissed as coach after six months in charge of the Eredivisie club.
"The synergy and chemistry we hoped for never happened," said club chairman Joop Munsterman.
Under Adriaanse, Twente has obtained a third-place position in the Dutch top flight where it sits just five points behind leaders AZ Alkmaar, but missed out on the chance to play in the Champions League group stage after falling to Portuguese side Benfica in the playoffs.
Former England coach Steve McClaren was reported to be the favorite to succeed Adriaanse, but Munsterman addressed those rumors by verifying that he is only on a list of possible candidates.
"We want to talk [with McClaren] and we will do that in the coming days," he said. He did not name any other possible candidates.
