Aberdeen edges Kilmarnock to reach second place

Aberdeen, Scotland (SportsNetwork.com) - Aberdeen claimed its third straight victory on Saturday after using Peter Pawlett's 69th-minute goal to hold off Kilmarnock, 1-0, at the Pittodrie Stadium to climb to second place in the Scottish Premier League.

The hosts had the majority of the chances but had to wait until the 69th minute to decide the match as Pawlett fired home his fourth goal of the campaign to take Aberdeen to within four points of leaders Celtic.

Aberdeen's David Goodwillie had the best opportunity in the first half for either side when he found space inside the penalty area to drive a shot off the crossbar.

Pawlett went close with a shot that sailed across the face of goal, but he made the most of his next chance when a shot from Jonny Hayes was parried by Kilmarnock goalkeeper Craig Samson, allowing Pawlett to score on the rebound.

Hamilton moved into third place as the club held off Ross County for a 1-0 win thanks to a goal in the sixth minute from Martin Canning, while Brian Graham scored from the penalty spot in the second half to help St Johnstone to a 1-0 win over Inverness.

Dundee FC salvaged a 1-1 draw at Partick Thistle thanks to an 89th-minute own goal from Conrad Balatoni, and Motherwell used a second-half goal from John Sutton to edge 10-man St Mirren, 1-0.
