16th annual Webby Awards highlight apps, not just sites

The 16th Annual Webby Award winners have been released, honoring websites, interactive advertising, online film & video, as well as apps. Awards will be presented May 21, 2012.

The popular awards go beyond just websites, however. David-Michel Davies, executive director of the Webbys, said he would acknowledge some of his favorite apps for their excellence at the awards show.

“[I'm a] huge fan of Flipboard," Davies told FoxNews.com. "I can read, or I should say skim, much more content than I used to be able to” with the popular program. Davies said he also uses the music service Spotify on a daily basis. Flipboard will receive the award for “Best News App (on a handheld),” and Spotify received the nod for “Best Music App.”

Other popular award winners this year are Instagram, receiving the high honor of “Breakout of the Year.” And the ever growing Pinterest -- a virtual pinboard that allows you to share your interests with other members -- was also given a shout out.

“Pinterest experienced tremendous growth this year, really changing the web, making it very visual. Not surprisingly they won in the visual design category and also the social media category,” Davies told FoxNews.com.

The Internet guru say he relies on his smartphone, especially when traveling.

“I travel a lot for business, and use 'Trip It' a lot. It's a great app for organizing all of your travel information, so when you are out and about all of your information flights, cars hotels is all right there.”

Winning the award for “Best Travel App,” Davies says he also also uses Flightboard to check flights. “When you get to an airport and you can’t find the board that has all the flight info on it, what it does is it puts that on your phone so you can see where your flight is.”

As tech savvy as Davies is, he says the first thing he does when he picks up his phone is still check email. “I guess the young kids don’t use email as much as we used to.”

And amazingly with all the apps, websites and emails, Davies says he does put his smartphone aside. “I try not to be tapped in all the time. On weekends and spending time with my family.”
