White House Press Secretary Jay Carney says that the burning of a holy text is "un-American and inappropriate" in response to questions about the burning of the Koran by a Florida pastor.

Rev. Terry Jones, who pastors the small Dove Outreach Center in Gainsville, Florida, burned the holy text a couple weeks ago that has sparked violence and tension in Afghanistan. The uprising has resulted in several civilian casualties and the deaths of U.N. workers.

Carney said there weren't any immediate measures they planned on taking against Jones.

"Our interest is not in elevating somebody whose behavior is inappropriate and un-American. What -- or does not represent what we believe are America's values. Our focus, however, is also on condemning the heinous acts that -- that took the lives of U.N. workers in Afghanistan," Carney said at Monday's White House briefing.
