Donald Trump raged against the federal government's treatment of veterans Thursday morning, and said he thinks illegal immigrants who manage to slip into the United States are getting better treatment.
"It's so bad, it's so bad and so sad. The veterans are treated so, so horribly," Trump said on "Fox and Friends." "You know the illegal immigrants are treated better in many cases than our veterans. It's disgraceful."
Trump, who ranks third in the Washington Examiner's GOP presidential power rankings, expressed disgust with the Department of Veterans Affairs and said he has an ideal replacement in mind for VA Secretary Robert McDonald. But Trump would not say who that person is, saying only that the person would be a man.
"I will fix the Veterans Administration through great management," Trump said. "I would have somebody in mind [to replace McDonald]. I actually have somebody that I think would be phenomenal if, in this case it's a he, if he would do it. I think he'd be phenomenal."
The VA has been criticized for more than a year after it was revealed officials were systematically denying veterans prompt care, and were cooking the books to make it look like veterans were quickly getting care. The VA has also been slammed by both political parties for continuing to hand out bonuses each year, despite these and other failures.
