DENVER – Conservatives wrapping up a three-day conference in Denver are taking an informal straw poll on their favorite to win the GOP presidential nomination.
The ballot includes some Republicans who haven't declared a formal candidacy, such as Texas Gov. Rick Perry. Perry addressed the Western Conservative Summit Friday night and gave a stump speech that sounded very much a presidential campaign. He attacked President Barack Obama and Congress and talked about the national debt-ceiling crisis.
About 1,000 conservatives at the summit also heard from presidential hopeful Rick Santorum, former senator from Pennsylvania. The summit ended with presidential hopeful Herman Cain of Georgia. Cain gave a crowd-pleasing speech on conservative themes and criticism of the Obama administration. He did not mention debt negotiations going on Sunday in Washington.
