- President says immediate reviews are complete. He was just briefed by his top advisors.

- "In our ever changing world, America's first line of defense" is intelligence, says the President.

- "Its now clear shortcomings occurred"  .... the intell community did not prioritize threats against the homeland;  there was failure to connect the dots; this in turn fed into shortcomings in the watch list system.

-"The US gov't had the information scattered throughout the system" .... this was a failure to understand the intelligence we already had.

-President is today directing the following:  (1) that our intel community assign specific responsbility for investigating threats and leads;  (2) that intel reports be distributed more rapidly and more widely; (3) that the analytical process be strengthened; (4) an immediate effort to strengthen criteria to add individuals to the watch lists, particularly the no fly list.

- At the Amsterdam airport, Umar Farouk Abdulmuttalab, underwent the same screening as everyone else, but the techonology used would not have detected the explosives in his pants.

- "We need to stay one step ahead of a nimble adversary," said the President.

- This incident was not the fault of a single person or agency, but a system failure across the board.

- Counter terrorism advistor John Brennan will report to the President in 30 days.

- "Ultimately the buck stops with me ... when the system fails it is my responsibility."

- "We are at war. At war against Al Qaeda ... We will do whatever it takes to defeat them."
