Dennis Rodman may have been fired – twice – from “Celebrity Apprentice,” but that isn’t stopping him from standing up for the guy who gave him the boot.

During Thursday night’s Republican presidential debate, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz made a comment about what Donald Trump was doing while the U.S. Senate was fighting over the so-called "Gang of Eight" comprehensive immigration reform bill of 2013.

The 1990 and 1991 NBA Defensive Player of the Year decided to play some defense for his former reality TV boss.

"Yes, @tedcruz; @realdonaldtrump did fire me on 'Celebrity Apprentice.' But he's about to fire your ass, too!" the man nicknamed "The Worm" said on Twitter.

Cruz’s comments came during a heated argument over immigration reform and which candidate had the toughest stance when it came to the issue.

Cruz claimed that while he was running for Senate and lead the fight against the provision in the Gang of Eight bill that allowed a path to citizenship for people in the country illegally – which Cruz refers to as amnesty – Trump was busy donating cash to a group of senators backing the bill.

Cruz added with a flourish, "Where was Donald? He was firing Dennis Rodman on 'Celebrity Apprentice.'"

"When you're funding open-border politicians, you shouldn't be surprised when they fight for open borders,” Cruz noted.

Immigration was one of the most hotly contested issues talked about during Thursday night’s debate in Houston – and both Cruz and Florida Sen. Marco Rubio took shots at Trump.

Rubio accused Trump of shifting his position on deportation, hiring people from other countries and taking away jobs from Americans in his real estate projects and being fined for worker violations.

“If you’re going to claim that you’re the only one who lifted [the immigration issue] into this campaign, then you ought to acknowledge that, for example, you’re the only person on this stage who has ever been fined for hiring people to work on your projects illegally,” Rubio said to Trump.

Trump shot back: “I’m the only one on the stage who’s hired people. You haven’t hired anybody."

Rubio answered, “You’ve hired a thousand people from another country.”
