A Texan is the likely next chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee.

Rep. Kevin Brady won the House Steering Committee endorsement to replace Paul Ryan, who resigned from the tax writing panel last week after the House elected him to serve as House speaker.

Brady, 60, represents a district north of Houston and is the most senior GOP member on the committee. He also heads the subcommittee on health.

Brady prevailed in a race to head the committee that pitted him against Pat Tiberi, R-Ohio. Tiberi serves as chairman of the Ways and Means trade subcommittee, and played a key role convincing fellow Republican lawmakers to back the trade promotion authority legislation, which many conservatives opposed.
