He inspires many Americans and scares others, which is another way of saying there is almost nothing ordinary about Barack Obama's presidency. Having made history, he now challenges it with dizzying boldness virtually every day.
Yet any perspective on how he's doing must begin by noting that the post-World War II landscape tilts heavily against Democratic presidencies. Before 2008, Republicans won seven of 10 elections, and, except for Bill Clinton, no Dem since FDR won two terms.
Our blood and our treasure. Everything else is second.
All of which makes the first 100 days of Obama's tenure an extraordinary high-wire act. He started by pushing record spending and tax hikes, and ends under fire over charges he is jeopardizing America's safety by releasing tough-interrogation memos and seeming to support prosecution of the Bush administration officials involved.
