Lindsay Clancy trial: FBI psychiatrist who rejected her ‘voice’ account faces cross-examination

An FBI psychiatrist testified Wednesday that financial pressure was among the stressors weighing on Lindsay Clancy before she killed her three children.
Dr. Gregory Saathoff said Clancy, a labor and delivery nurse, had repeatedly delayed her return to work because she did not feel mentally healthy enough, and that she listed finances as a stressor in her own records. Believing "her brain had been damaged" and that she could no longer do the work she loved or help support her family, Saathoff said, left her with a sense of being a burden.
Clancy faces three counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of her children, Cora, Dawson and Callan. She does not dispute killing them but says she was suffering from postpartum psychosis.

FBI psychiatrist Gregory Saathoff is expected to return to the stand Wednesday in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial, facing cross-examination after telling jurors he does not believe a voice drove her to kill her three children.
Saathoff, a senior psychiatrist for the FBI's Behavioral Analysis Unit who said he spent about 11 hours interviewing Clancy, called key parts of her account of a command hallucination unusual. "Committing the act is not curative of the voice. I've not ever seen that," he testified.
Clancy faces three counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of her children, Cora, Dawson and Callan. She does not dispute killing them but says she was suffering from postpartum psychosis.

A South Carolina lawmaker who prosecuted Susan Smith in her infamous double-murder case says the women on Lindsay Clancy's jury could prove to be a "strange twist," and may be less sympathetic to her than many assume.
Clancy, 36, has been charged with three counts of first-degree murder in connection with the deaths of her children — Cora, Dawson and Callan, all younger than 6 — who were discovered strangled at the family's home in January 2023.
Her defense attorney says she was experiencing postpartum psychosis at the time she killed her children.
Testimony is expected to finish on Wednesday, with closing arguments anticipated for Thursday, after which the case will go to the jury. The panel seated for the trial is made up of 12 women and six men, but only 12 of them will deliberate, the rest serve as alternates and will be dismissed before deliberations begin.
