Why you should check out these new food trends

If you’ve been trying to eat healthier – here are some new food trends.

Registered dietitian Kristin Kirkpatrick from the Cleveland Clinic discusses some new foods gaining popularity because of the health benefits they provide.

Seaweed and algae as a snack is one new food trend, and they are most likely available at your local grocery store as “snack packs,” she said.

“Seaweed is so high in a variety of minerals, and it’s also very high in iron,” Kirkpatrick said. “Again, it’s low in calories, no carbohydrates – and it will give you a lot of health benefits.”

Another food you should be eating – black garlic.

Black garlic is created through an aging process, which uses high heat and humidity – so it tastes a little sweeter and less pungent than the white garlic you may be used to. And it has many of the same health benefits, like antibiotic properties and promotes good cardiovascular health.

Kirkpatrick also suggested eating kale, which is in the same family as cabbage, Brussels sprouts and cauliflower.

Kale is packed with antioxidants, and you can buy kale chips to snack on, or just trim it from the stem, she said.

Kirkpatrick said consumers can expect to see more hempseed used in products, as it is high in protein, potassium and magnesium – and it may just reduce your risk of heart disease.

One more food to add to your must-eat list: almond butter.

“Most people are used to peanut butter and the taste,” she said. “Almond butter has more of that gritty almond taste, and it’s fabulous. Also, there are some studies that show almond butter may help to reduce your risk for diabetes. Almond butter is high in vitamin E, which helps your heart, your brain and also helps your skin and hair.”
