PERTH, Australia -- A seriously injured man with suspected broken legs defied incredible pain to haul himself to the top of a cliff after plunging over the edge in darkness, police in Western Australia said Thursday.

The man, who was unable to walk, crawled to the top of the cliff after crashing several yards onto a rocky reef south of Seabird, about 62 miles north of Perth.

He was spotted in the remote location early Thursday, after apparently blundering over the edge during the night.

A paramedic was winched from a rescue helicopter to treat him before he was airlifted to Royal Perth Hospital.

The extent of his injuries and his condition were not fully known.
