The NPD Group, a leading market research company, recently released a report entitled Before the Store. This report represents nearly 5,000 survey respondents from 2,000 households and provides insight into consumer shopping habits. Survey questions assessed a wide range of topics, including:
-who in the household does the shopping,
-where people shop for food and beverages and why,
-how people use shopping lists and who influences these lists,
-what motivates impulse purchases
The results tell us that the majority of American households are making grocery lists and better yet the majority of people stick to their lists. According to the NPD Group, women primarily prepare the lists, but they take input from spouses and children in the majority of cases. One in four respondents were more likely to give into impulse purchases for the following reasons:
-80 percent report seeing the item on promotion
-67 percent saw the item in the store and remembered it was needed
-37 percent said it looked like a good meal or snack
When list shopping, there are Apps suggestions for list making that suggest what to put on the list (iphone/Android- Grocery iQ)
Remember, shop the perimeter when hitting the grocery store, which is where the majority of fresh foods reside. Think produce, meats/seafood, dairy.
Shop after you've eaten.
Shop with a list and a plan. It doesn't have to be a full blown meal plan, but a rough sketch of what you plan to prepare with the food you buy helps to reduce weight and needless calories from sneaking into your diet.
Shop alone when you're in a hurry, but with others when you have the time. Avoid needless arguments in the cookie aisle with your kids...or your spouse when you're in a time crunch. Take the experience as it comes when you have time to spare. Use the opportunity to show off the advantage of using the list, letting kids select new/different produce, cost savings, new ideas.
Put the blinders on as you approach the checkout. The candy is there for a reason!
