A Louisiana company has issued a recall for frozen ground tuna over concerns about potential salmonella contamination after the health officials received reports of 13 illnesses. Jensen Tuna said the voluntary recall affects products imported from JK Fish, which is individually packaged in 1-pound clear plastic bags and sold in white wax 20-pound boxes.
The product has been sold to wholesalers in Connecticut, Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, North Dakota, New York and Washington, which then distributed the tuna to restaurants and retailers between Nov. 30, 2018 and March 15, 2019. Affected products have lot numbers of z266, z271 and z272.

“Restaurants and retailers should check with their suppliers and not sell or serve recalled frozen ground tuna and should wash and sanitize locations where recalled ground tuna was stored,” the recall notice posted to the FDA website said. “Consumers with concerns should ask their restaurants and retailers whether the tuna dish they are purchasing contained the recalled ground tuna.”
While the company said the ground tuna samples tested negative for salmonella, it said the recall was initiated “following discussions with the FDA, CDC, and state partners.”

There have been no deaths linked to the salmonella outbreak, but two patients have been hospitalized due to illness. Salmonella can cause gastrointestinal illness and fever, with most patients developing symptoms 12 to 72 hours after infection. The symptoms typically last four to seven days and do not require treatment, but those at risk for developing severe illnesses include children younger than 5, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems.
