An unidentified child was diagnosed with measles on Martha’s Vineyard, Mass., leading hospital officials on the island to warn community members that the child was infectious from Monday, June 8 through Wednesday, June 17, MyFoxBoston.com reported.
According to hospital officials, the child was not vaccinated and was visiting from another state. The patient was diagnosed on June 17 and officials believe other exposures are likely.
While infectious, the child visited the following public places on the 87.47-square mile island:
• West Tisbury Public Library June 8 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
• Aquinnah Library Tuesday on June 9 from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Thursday June 11 from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
• Martha's Vineyard Airport Laundromat in West Tisbury on Friday June 12 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
• Sharky's Cantina in Oak Bluffs Tuesday on June 16 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
• Ryan Family Amusements in Oak Bluffs on June 16 5:30 p.m. - 9 p.m.
“It's concerning because you have staff involved and guests and you want to be safe. This happened on Tuesday and we're finding out about it on Monday, obviously we're six days in to it, there's no more reason to be concerned in the restaurant,” JB Blau, the owner of Sharky's Cantina, told MyFoxBoston.com
"As most measles cases in the U.S. have been among unvaccinated people and people who don't know their vaccination status, it is important for people to confirm their immunization status with their healthcare provider, and for parents to have their children vaccinated with the measles vaccine (called MMR), which is safe and highly effective,” Dr. Monica Bharel, Massachusetts Commissioner of Public Health said in a statement.
Martha’s Vineyard Hospital is offering a free vaccination clinic for non-vaccinated children on June 24 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
