A 12-year-old boy who asked for a dog with three legs after losing one of his own to cancer has found a loving companion in a 2-year-old pitbull mix named Logan.
Quinn Scharn was first diagnosed with an undisclosed cancer as a baby, and underwent a year of chemotherapy and six weeks of radiation by the time he was two, 9 News reported. Two years ago, he faced another cancer diagnosis and had his right leg and hip amputated.
“Right after my surgery, I wanted a dog with three legs,” Scharn told Fox 40. “That was the first thing I said when I woke up.”
Scharn’s mother, Teresa, set off on an extensive search to find the perfect match for her son, which led to the Front Street Animal Shelter in Sacramento. She found photos of Logan, who had been picked up as a stray with a broken leg that had to be amputated, Fox 40 reported. However, before they had the chance to connect with the pup, another family had reserved him.
“They were disappointed but decided to wait,” Gina Knepp, of Front Street Animal Shelter, told Fox 40. “So they sat down and waited and the woman changed her mind.”
Logan and Scharn had an instant connection, bringing many who witnessed the union to tears.
"When I saw him and the dog together the immediate reaction was a welling of tears, there were a lot of tears yesterday, joyful tears,” Knepp told Fox 40.
