Maine restaurant gives free toilet paper roll with meal order ahead of temporary closure

The Red Barn Restaurant will close on Nov. 22 until early 2021

Would you like a side of toilet paper with that?

A Maine restaurant is giving away a free roll of toilet paper with every “Family Meal” order as it prepares to close for the next two months, according to the restaurant’s Facebook page.

On Thursday, the Red Barn Restaurant in Augusta, Maine, posted a picture of the owner, Laura Benedict, holding two big boxes of toilet paper.

“Laura's going to give COVID the ‘1-2’ punch!” the post said. “We're putting a roll of toilet paper in with every Family Meal! While supplies last!”

According to local television station WMTW, the Red Barn bought more than 500 rolls of toilet paper “in the wake of new COVID-19 restrictions” specifically to give to customers before the restaurant closes on Nov. 22.

Benedict told WMTW that the giveaway is a chance to bring some fun into a difficult time.

“I kind of suspected that we’d be in this position again in the early to late fall, so I just thought it would be a nice icebreaker,” Benedict told the station. “There’s a lot of anxiety, understandably, and it makes people smile.”

Benedict announced that the Red Barn would be closed until early next year in a Facebook video on Friday, saying that she’s temporarily closing so she won’t put her customers at risk.

“My customers’ safety is worth way more than any amount of money we could possibly generate,” she said in the video.

Benedict also said she expects Maine is going to shut down again, as coronavirus cases rise in the state -- and across the country.

“We’ll open up in early 2021, as soon as we can,” she said. “And I suspect things will get better by then.”

But in the meantime, she said, it’s “just too risky” to keep her restaurant open.

However, she told WMTW that she plans to continue delivering food to local nursing homes.
