Madonna Takes Ultra to the Next Level, References Ecstasy Use

The Ultra Music Festival wouldn’t be the biggest party in the country without a surprise guest to put it completely over-the-top. At 11:07 p.m. on Saturday night, when the crowd started chanting for the hottest new Swedish DJ Avicii, out walked the biggest pop music icon in the world to introduce him—Madonna.

Ultra and Miami took their party to the next level, with their superstar guest. Madge was there to premier Avicii’s remix of her new single, “Girl Gone Wild,” from her album titled MDNA, which drops Monday.

The Material girl appeared on stage wearing spandex short shorts, fishnet tights, Chanel fingerless gloves, and an MDNA T-shirt. But it didn’t take more than 53 seconds for the legendary dance-music queen to immediately throw herself into the thick of controversy.

After briefly talking about her excitement at being at Ultra and how “amazing” Avicii is, Madonna went on to say, “Electronic dance music has been a part of my life since the beginning of my career. I can honestly say a DJ saved my life.”

Then she had a question for the cheering crowd,“How many people in this crowd have seen Molly?”

In addition to being a track by DJ and producer Cedric Gervais, Molly is also a slang for the active chemical in ecstasy, a drug often associated with electronic dance music (EDM) concerts. Bloggers, twitter, and music critics blew up the Internet.

Huffington Post reported today that Canadian music producer and DJ Deadmau5, real name Joel Zimmerman, has railed against the star in profanity-laced messages on Twitter, Facebook, and his own website.

Calling the comment, “Grossly irresponsible. I can appreciate her meteoric career, and all good deeds done, but WHAT THE F--- WAS THAT?" he continued.

On his website, Mau5 goes on to say with regard to Madonna’s comment,
“This (responsibility) is certainly what it should be about, and it’s what I'm about regarding the Madonna issue. Whether I like it or not, and like every other walk of life, whether you’re becoming an adult, or climbing up the corporate ladder, or blazing a path in your chosen profession, I'm in a position now where I should be responsible.”

Despite the Madge controversy, Ultra was a huge success. It was a three-day gathering on eight stages spanning across Bayfront Park. With over 150,000 scantily and oddly dressed youngsters, enjoying the largest gathering of EDM artists new and legendary in the world.

Ending all three nights with firework displays, high-end pyrotechnic lighting productions on all the stages, and cool merchandise in abundance, Miami’s nightclubs took full advantage of having some the world’s best DJ’s spinning for the world’s biggest celebs in town. DJ Afrojack played at the W hotel’s club the Wall, while girlfriend Paris Hilton danced nearby, Deadmau5 was over at the Arkadia club at the Fontainebleau, Benny Bennasi was at the Delano Hotel Beach Club, Erick Morillo and Dave Guetta were at LIV in the Fontainebleau, and on Sunday night Timbaland made a guest appearance with Dev at her 4pm set on the main stage at Ultra to perform their new song “Break Ya’ Back.”

For the Ultra fans looking to be apart of the next festival—Buenos Aires on May 5th, Ibiza on May 27th, Warsaw July 13th-14th, Korea August 4th, and Sao Paulo late 2012—rave on.

Madonna’s 12th studio album MDNA, dedicated to club-friendly tracks, has been receiving lukewarm reviews from music critics.
