‘Hamilton’ blows the Grammy night away

The cast of the Broadway smash hit "Hamilton" took the stage for a rousing performance of their opening number. The cast won the Grammy Award for best musical theater album.

Lin-Manuel Miranda surprised “Star Wars” and “Hamilton” fans alike last week when he performed his version of the new “cantina” scene from “Force Awakens” during the Broadway show’s weekly live #Ham4Ham lottery.

Miranda, whose show received a record 16 Tony Award nominations last Tuesday, celebrated May 4th (or “May the Fourth Be With You” day) by bringing along the film’s director, J.J. Abrams, to deliver a live rendition of their song “Jabba Flow.”

The 36-year-old playwright explained to the crowd that the song – featured during the film’s new cantina scene – was written in “Huttese,” the gidderish-sounding language of “Return of the Jedi” villain Jabba the Hutt.

Abrams recounted how their partnership came together – he had gone to see a performance of “Hamilton” last year and Miranda jokingly told him that if he needed help with the cantina song, he was his man – before performing the space saga song.

For the first time, the 100-second-long track was also then added to iTunes and the official “Star Wars” site for fans to stream.

Miranda’s #Ham4Ham is a weekly performance that he and the rest of the cast of “Hamilton” put on for the show’s live lottery drawing. As guests he has brought in the likes of New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, dancer Lil Buck and others.
