Call him mean, call him "uncivil," but Ricky Gervais had us laughing so much during Sunday night's Golden Globes that we were spilling popcorn all over the couch.

But it was a certain type of laughter: The type preceded by a gasp, sort of like when you first watch "Borat" and you think to yourself, "I can't believe he just said that."

Yup, he said it.

SODAHEAD SLIDESHOW: See the most awkward award show moments of all time.

For us, the most shocking moment of the night was when Gervais went gunning for Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp just minutes into the show. Looking alternately smug and friendly (mostly smug), Angelina sat there like a queen in her green gown, so beautiful that you could hardly believe that she deigned to show up.

But that didn't stop Gervais from taking several knocks at her nominated movie "The Tourist."

"I'd like to quash the rumors that the only reason 'The Tourist' was nominated was so that the Hollywood Foreign Press can hang out with Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie. That is rubbish, that is not the only reason. They also accepted bribes."

You could almost hear the producers thinking, "Lay off Angelina, Ricky! What if she won't come back next year?"

Others were even more insulted by Gervais' not-so-cryptic quip about closeted gay Scientologists in Hollywood.

"Also not nominated was 'I Love You Phillip Morris,' Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor. Two heterosexual characters pretending to be gay," he said. "So the complete opposite of some famous Scientologists, then."

Ricky also took some low blows at Bruce Willis (calling him "Ashton Kutcher's dad"), Robert Downey Jr.'s history with drugs, and the entire cast of "Sex and the City 2" (he said whoever airbrushed the promotional poster for the movie should win an award for best special effects).

Funny? Yes.

Offensive? Yes.

Awkward? Undoubtedly ... but let us know: Will Gervais go down in history for the most awkward award show moment of all time?

Or does Angelina kissing her brother still take the cake?
