Fashionable football helmets auctioned off ahead of the Super Bowl
NEW YORK – Fashion and football gear generally don’t go hand in hand—especially when it comes to helmets, of all things. But this year, ahead of the Super Bowl, Bloomingdale's is teaming up with the Council off Fashion Designers of America and the NFL to auction of 48 high-fashion football helmets.
That’s right, high-fashion helmets. They are covered in fur, feathers, flowers and sparkles—lots of sparkles. Some helmets feature sharp spikes, while others showcase well-known designer logos. There’s even one with the Empire State Building protruding from the top.
The helmets were designed by some of fashion’s biggest names, such as Betsey Johnson, Tadashi Shoji, Badgley Mischka and Alice + Olivia.
The proceeds from the auction will go to the NFL Foundation, which support the health and safety of athletes.
Interested fashionistas can bid online to get the helmets, and the auction ends Feb. 4, just after the big game.
The idea for the unique helmets came to fruition partially because Super Bowl XLVIII will be held in East Rutherford, New Jersey, some of the key players explained.
"Bloomingdales’ New York Heritage combined with the fact that Super Bowl XLVIII is taking place in our back yard gives us an opportunity to merge fashion and sports in a modern way,” Frank Berman, Bloomingdale's executive vice president of marketing, said in a statement.
Steven Kolb of the CFDA explained that the Super Bowl’s location had an impact on the organization’s involvement as well.
“This is the first time that the Super Bowl will be held in the New York region and we couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate by joining Bloomingdale’s and the NFL in merging fashion and sports with the creation of these unique helmets,” Kolb stated.
But fashionable football wear doesn’t come cheap. The minimum bid for each helmet is $248, so choose wisely fashion enthusiasts.
