Demi Lovato reveals she's no longer 'sober' after 6 years of sobriety in new single, “Sober.”
Less than a week after releasing “Sober” and revealing she’d relapsed after six years of sobriety, Demi Lovato broke down in tears while performing the song.
Lovato, 25, tweeted a video of the performance on Sunday night from the Rock in Rio Lisboa festival, which was also live-streamed on LiveXLive.
“Tonight I took the stage, a new person with a new life,” she wrote. “Thank you to everyone who has supported me throughout this journey. It will never be forgotten.”
Seated at a piano, the former Disney star kept her composure during the beginning of the song, but her voice broke and she began to weep while singing, “And I’m sorry for the fans I lost / Who watched me fall again / I want to be a role model, but I’m only human.”
At that moment, the audience cheered for the singer, which appeared to help her continue on with the song.
At the tune’s end, the crowd chanted, “We love you, we love you.”
Last week, Lovato released the ballad after hinting for weeks that changes were coming to her image and music, as well as to her life as a whole.
“There’s nothing like the truth. The honest to God, uncomfortable and shocking truth. Sometimes you have to share your story in the most honest way possible… for me that’s through music,” she tweeted in May. “Sometimes you have to end an era to begin talking about a new chapter of your life … I feel like I’ve grown more in the past two months than I have in years. I feel like a new woman and I’m so grateful for my life today.”
Around the same time, she dropped her longtime management and PR company, PhillyMack, and signed with Roc Nation.
She also disappeared from the CAST Centers website, despite co-owning the mental health facility.
At the time, Lovato tweeted to a fan that the biggest lesson she learned this year is that “You can’t always trust people who you once thought saved you.”
