RICHMOND, Va. – A judge has ruled that a woman charged with first-degree murder in the beating death of a toddler is not competent to stand trial.
The Richmond Times-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/2d6zPse ) reports that defense attorney Leonard McCall requested an evaluation of 25-year-old Danielle Turner's competency for trial in August. He said the defendant didn't understand events surrounding the case and had sometimes described 3-year-old victim Latrice Walden as a teenager.
On Tuesday, a Richmond Circuit Court judge ruled Turner should be sent to a psychiatric hospital to be restored to competency.
Police say paramedics found Walden unconscious but breathing at a Richmond home in February. An autopsy report says the girl subsequently died at a hospital from blunt-force trauma to the head. Authorities say she had more than 80 bruises and cuts.
