Police in Lake Stevens, Washington, say they have arrested a man and a woman accused of abandoning their three young children without food in a cold, filthy house.

Cmdr. Dennis Taylor said Tuesday that it wasn't known how long the children had been unattended when police removed them Saturday, but the parents had to be tracked down by investigators. The adults, both 33, were booked into jail for investigation of felony criminal mistreatment and abandonment of a dependent person.

The children are 7 years old, 3 years old and 11 months old. Taylor says they were found surrounded by animal feces and garbage.

The children were taken to a hospital, where the baby was found to have a core temperature of 94 degrees and was treated for hypothermia and dehydration. All are now in the custody of Child Protective Services.

The Daily Herald of Everett (http://is.gd/CdBYxb) reports the parents are expected to make a court appearance Wednesday.

Lake Stevens is about 30 miles north of Seattle.
