Indiana police questioned and released a Saudi Arabian man after the pilot of a passenger jet said he tried to break into the plane’s cockpit during a flight.
The captain of the American Airlines flight late Wednesday, from New York to Indianapolis, said Abdulaziz Mubarak Alshammari, 20, walked up to the plane’s cockpit door and tried opening it. A passenger then intervened and led Alshammari back to his seat, Fox59 reports.
Alshammari told a flight attendant he was a student at the University of Indianapolis, but the school denied he was enrolled, Fox59 reports.
A police report said Alshammari appeared confused during questioning and wrote a note in Arabic during the flight, 10 News reports. He told authorities that he first flew out of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, before heading to Qatar, New York City’s JFK airport and then Indianapolis.
Alshammari was released and not charged. Background checks from the Indiana Intelligence Fusion Center and FBI Terrorist Screening Center found no clear cause for concern, Fox59 reports.
