It may be a while before the Ford Motor Company gets around to making another supercar, but one California Ford dealer is taking up the slack.
Galpin Auto Sports of “Pimp My Ride” fame, and part of the Galpin Ford empire in the city of North Hills, has announced plans to build a line of high performance coupes based on the legendary Ford GT.
Called the GTR-1, the custom shop says the car is its take on what GT would look like today if Ford had kept it in production and continued to develop it. Just 4038 of the $150,000 GTs were built from 2005 to 2006 and were considered among the greatest performance cars in the world at the time with a top speed of 205 mph.

While the GT featured a retro design that harkened back to Ford race cars of the 1960’s, the GTR-1 sports a more modern shape with bodywork made of either aluminum or carbon fiber and is powered by a modified version of the GT’s 550 hp supercharged 5.4-liter V8 that Galpin says will be good for at least 1,000 hp. It also gets an updated suspension, brakes and interior.
Pricing has not been announced, but construction of the first car is underway and it should be unveiled in a few weeks.
Whether or not Ford will take up the challenge and build a new supercar of its own is yet to be seen.
