Ford has developed technology to stop rear-end crashes.

The system allows a vehicle to spot when a car is about to plow into its back and take evasive action.

It could see the price of car insurance tumble.

Ford said new models will be fitted with sensors and cameras to monitor traffic and calculate the risk of a smash.

If the driver behind is too fast or is too close the on-board computer takes over and pulls the car out of the way into a neighboring lane.

If traffic makes that impossible the system will find the best way to reduce the damage.

Ford recently said it hopes to have self-driving cars on the roads by 2021.
