Rick Hendrick wasn’t in Las Vegas this weekend, but he still stole the show at the Seventh Annual Barrett-Jackson Las Vegas Collector-Car Auction.
The NASCAR team owner is an avid car collector as well as a racer, and Saturday night Hendrick bought the very first 2015 Dodge Challenger Hellcat 700001 for $825,000. Hendrick employee Dale Ledbetter bid on behalf of his boss to purchase the 707-horsepower Hellcat. This is the only Hellcat painted in Stryker Red, a color only available on the Viper sports car.
All the proceeds from the Hellcat sale will go to Opportunity Village Foundation, a Las Vegas-based nonprofit that works with people who have intellectual disabilities.
Each of the Detroit Big Three automakers donated a hot muscle car to be sold for charities of their respective choosing on Super Saturday at Barrett-Jackson.
The first to cross the block was a 2014 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28, VIN No. 003. The jet black Z/28 raised $147,500 for the YMCA of Southern Nevada.
One hour later, the very last of 1,964 Limited Edition 2015 Mustangs went up for auction. It hammered for $170,000 with every penny of that headed to the Get Your Heart Racing Foundation to benefit the Henry Ford Heart & Vascular Institute, one of the oldest and most experienced cardiovascular programs in the nation.
