Ford’s new foal is galloping around.
A prototype of the next-generation Mustang out for a test drive was caught on camera by the folks at fan forum Mustang6g.com.
Clad in extensive black camouflage, the new pony car was spotted outside Ford’s secret development center in Allen Park, Mich.
The sound coming out of the dual exhausts suggest it was a V8 model. The new car will reportedly switch to an independent rear suspension, and feature updated versions of the familiar 5.0-liter V8 and 3.7-liter V6 found in the current Mustang, along with a 2.3-liter turbocharged engine slotted in between.
And maybe something else.
Mustangs Daily reports that a top of the line model will resurrect the GT350 name when it is unveiled at the New York Auto Show next April 17th, the 50th anniversary of the original Mustang’s debut in New York in 1964.
According to Road and Track, instead of the 662 hp supercharged 5.8-liter V8 in the current GT500, the track-focused GT350 will get a less powerful naturally-aspirated V8, pitting it directly against the upcoming Camaro Z28, which will feature a 500 hp 7.0-liter V8.
But that might be all.
Mustangs Daily adds that sources say Ford is planning to follow up the GT350 with a new Mach 1 Mustang. There’s no telling what might be under the hood of that one, but if the history of that name is anything to go by, you can count on something special.
