GEORGETOWN, Guyana – The president of a non-governmental organization in Guyana says her group has rescued a young boy was working in a remote gold mining camp in the South American country.
Simona Broomes of the Women Miners Association says the boy's exact age could not be determined but he appears to be no older than 8. He was panning for gold with adults in the remote Puruni region near the Venezuela border. Broomes said Monday the boy was taken into protective custody while she works with authorities to locate his mother.
It is illegal for anyone under 15 to work full-time in Guyana except under certain circumstances. The law is widely flaunted and U.S. government faulted Guyana in September for making only minimal efforts against the worst forms of child labor.
