Israeli-built anti-tank missiles will be deployed on Yeonpyeong Island by South Korea’s military in February, according to a government source.

The precision-guided “Spike” missiles are part of an effort to fortify Yeonpyeong and four neighboring islands located near the western sea border with North Korea, the source told The Korea Times.

In a year-end report to President Lee Myung-bak last month, South Korea’s Ministry of National Defense revealed a plan to increase border security by the islands, which included missile deployment.

The ministry also said it would form a West Sea defense command comprising of 12,000 troops from the nation’s Army, Navy, and Air Force, the Times reports.
