SANAA, Yemen – A Yemeni security official says one soldier has been killed and five others wounded by the explosion of a booby-trapped car near a military checkpoint east of the capital Sanaa.
The official said the Wednesday attack in Marib province appeared to have been carried out by Yemen's active Al Qaeda branch.
Security has largely collapsed across Yemen during the year-old popular uprising seeking to push longtime autocratic President Ali Abdullah Saleh from power. Saleh is currently in the U.S. being treated for injuries sustained in a bomb blast last year. Under a U.S.-backed plan, his deputy is to be rubber stamped as the country's new leader in elections on Feb. 21.
The official spoke on condition of anonymity due to regulations.
