The Saudi military says a soldier posted along the country's southern border has died of wounds sustained from a missile strike launched by Shiite rebels inside Yemen.

The rebels, known as Houthis, frequently fire missiles from inside Yemen at Saudi border posts. More than two dozen Saudi soldiers have been killed in such attacks.

The Saudi military said Wednesday that the soldier was wounded at a border post in Najran and later died of his injuries. The statement did not make clear when the attack took place.

Saudi Arabia is leading a coalition of countries that has been carrying out airstrikes against the Houthis since late March.

The United Nations says airstrikes and ground fighting have killed more than 1,400 civilians and displaced more than a million amid shortages of fuel and medical supplies.
