BUDAPEST, Hungary – A court in Hungary has acquitted the head of the Simon Wiesenthal Center Jerusalem office of libel in a case filed against him by a former Hungarian police officer recently indicted for war crimes.
Judge Viktor Vadasz of the Pest Central District Court said Tuesday that Wiesenthal Center head Efraim Zuroff had denounced Sandor Kepiro as a war criminal not to embarrass him but to pressure Hungarian authorities into investigating the case.
Kepiro, 97-years old, has admitted to leading a Hungarian patrol which took part in a raid on the northern Serbian town of Novi Sad in January 1942. The raid left more than 1,200 civilians dead.
According to prosecutors, unidentified members of the patrol killed four people during the raid. Kepiro, whose trial is set to start on Thursday, denies the charges.
