Vietnamese police arrest lawmaker for alleged fraud over housing project that never started

State media say Vietnamese police have detained a lawmaker for alleged fraud involving a housing project.

The Tien Phong newspaper reported Thursday that Chau Thi Thu Nga, 49, was taken into police custody Wednesday night. Her house in Hanoi was searched.

The case centered on a housing project developed by Nga's private housing company, which began to collect deposits from buyers in 2009, the report said.

The project was expected to be finished by the end of this year, but it was never started and the land remains empty, it said. Nga had not returned the 300 billion dong ($14 million) of deposits to prospective buyers, it added.

Earlier Wednesday, Nga was temporarily suspended from the National Assembly, which effectively removed her criminal immunity.
