BOGOTA, Colombia – Venezuela's government says a former general wanted by the United States on drug charges will be released by authorities in Aruba and return home shortly.
Foreign Minister Elias Jaua has read parts of what he says is a letter from the Netherlands' ambassador in Caracas agreeing with the Venezuelan government's position that Hugo Carvajal's detention violated international law because he was sent to the Caribbean island as Venezuela's consul and was carrying a diplomatic passport.
Authorities in Aruba have argued that Carvajal didn't have immunity because he had yet to be accredited. The possibility of extradition to the United States has threatened to worsen Venezuela's already tense relations with Washington.
Jaua says Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has sent a plane to Aruba to bring Carvajal home no later than Monday.
