A U.S. man at the center of an investigation into the discovery of hazardous chemicals in various Halifax locations has appeared in court on charges of uttering threats against police and possessing a dangerous chemical.

Christopher Burton Phillips, 42, was remanded into custody Friday. He was due to return to court Jan. 29.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police Chief Supt. Roland Wells said police searching one cottage east of Halifax have found dozens of different unlabeled chemicals stacked floor to ceiling.

The discovery of the chemicals prompted the evacuation of two neighborhoods in Halifax. Police also evacuated an Ottawa hotel where Phillips was arrested, though no chemicals were found there.

Police allege Phillips possessed a chemical called osmium tetroxide for a dangerous purpose. It remains unclear what he planned to do with the chemicals.
