LIMA, Peru – The United Nations' child relief agency is warning that thousands of children in Peru are at risk of severe malnutrition as a result of floods and mudslides that have killed 106 people and left countless more homeless.
UNICEF representative Maria Luisa Fornara told The Associated Press Wednesday that 15,000 children under the age of 2 don't have access to sufficient food, clean water and sanitary living conditions.
The Andean nation has been struck by a series of intense rains caused by a warming of Pacific Ocean waters. The storms have damaged thousands of homes and destroyed hundreds of bridges and roads.
Along Peru's northern coast some displaced families are living in tents and makeshift shelters. Fornara warned that in those conditions children are often the first to get sick.
