LONDON – Britain's unelected upper house has endorsed government plans to let U.K. universities charge up to 9,000 pounds ($14,000) a year — three times higher than the current limit.
The tuition hike has aroused fierce anger from students and embarrassed some within Britain's coalition government who had pledged to oppose any such increase.
Violent demonstrations — which included an attack on Prince Charles and his wife, Camilla — coincided with the regulation's passage through the House of Commons last week. The resolution passed the Lords comfortably late Tuesday night.
A defeat there would have been unusual as the Lords — which wields far less power than the Commons — rarely rejects regulations.
But the anger surrounding the debate means that the vote was closely watched in Britain.
