Police say that a plane has landed safely at Britain's Manchester Airport after being escorted by the Royal Air Force following a warning of a possible device on board.

The police statement says that authorities do not know if the threat is genuine, but that it was "absolutely vital that we deal with the situation as a full emergency."

Chief Superintendent John O'Hare says that people will see the police and other agencies at the airport and that the public should not be alarmed.
