LONDON -- Britain and France have told supporters of Muammar Qaddafi to ditch their leader "before it is too late."
In a joint statement issued on Monday, Prime Minister David Cameron and President Nicolas Sarkozy said they are calling on Qaddafi loyalists that they are facing a final chance to withdraw their backing for the dictator.
Cameron and Sarkozy said a conference in London on Tuesday must kick-start a political process aimed at allowing Libyans to chose their own leadership.
Around 40 nations and international institutions will join the talks, discussing plans for post-conflict humanitarian aid and Libya's future.
The statement said the opposition Interim National Transitional Council and other civil society figures should begin work to prepare for elections in the future.
