The government says Bernard Hogan-Howe, acting deputy commissioner for Britain's Metropolitan Police, has been named the new head of the force.

The Home Office says Hogan-Howe impressed officials with his commitment to cutting crime.

In a statement Monday, Home Secretary Theresa May said Hogan-Howe has the skills and experience needed to head Britain's biggest police force during government efforts to transform the police.

Former Met police chief Paul Stephenson and former assistant commissioner John Yates quit in quick succession following the British tabloid News of the World phone hacking scandal.
